Developed in Italy in 1985, the Beretta M9 is a reliable semi-automatic pistol adopted by the United States military as their service pistol in 1985. It was chosen due to its survivability in a number of conditions including exposure to temperature ranges between -40℉ to 140℉, salt water corrosion, repeated drops on concrete, and being buried in sand, mud, and snow. Short recoil with a 15-round box magazine, the Beretta M9 included a reversible magazine release button for either left or right-handed shooters.
