The M60, officially titled the United States Machine Gun, Caliber 7.62 mm, M60, is a family of machine guns developed in the late 1950’s using 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges from a belt of disintegrating M13 links. Several types of ammunition are approved for the M60 including ball, racer, and armor-piercing rounds.
Serving with every branch of the U.S military and still serving with the armed forces of other states, its manufacture and continued upgrade for military and commercial purchase continues into the 21st century. However, it has been replaced in most roles by other designs, most notably the m240 machine gun in the U.S service.
